Dow will remain a sponsor, says London Olympics organising committee

London:? Despite growing voices against Dow Chemical's association with the 2012 London Olympics, the mega sporting event's organiser, the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG), has said that the multinational will continue to remain a sponsor. The LOCOG is responsible for preparing and staging the 2012 Games.

The announcement was made by Paul Deighton, the chief executive of the LOCOG. It comes a day after a commissioner of an ethics watchdog for the event, Meredith Alexander, resigned over Dow Chemical's links to the 1984 Bhopal gas disaster.

Reacting to Meredith Alexander's resignation, Mr Deighton said today, "It is absolutely her right to resign. She is one of 12 members of that sustainability commission who signed off on the way we approached awarding the wrap to Dow. I think that it is great that we have got this independent function to oversee so all this is washed through transparently. I think that is fine but we are moving on."

Yesterday, Meredith Alexander said she was stepping down from her unpaid position on the Commission for a Sustainable London 2012 (CSL), which monitors sustainability at the Olympics and Paralympics. "I don't want to be party to a defence of Dow Chemicals, the company responsible for one of the worst corporate human rights violations in my generation," she said.

After Meredith Alexander quit her post, more politicians in the UK have joined the protest. Opposition Labour Party's Shadow Olympic Minister Tessa Jowell also joined the chorus against Dow and called for a review of Dow's sponsorship decision.

"I have called today for an audit of the steps taken that led the Commission for a Sustainable London 2012 to recommend to the London Olympics organisers, the LOCOG, that Dow Chemicals' sponsorship of the wrap was consistent with the high sustainability aims that we set for 2012 (Games). We also need to understand what the role of other Commissioners was in the process which reached that conclusion.

"We need a solution not a row. Dow Chemicals need to understand the seriousness with which people take the continuing situation in Bhopal following the tragic disaster in 1984. I will do everything I can to make sure this issue does not overshadow the Games. There is still time for a solution to be found," Tessa Jowell said in a statement.

Meanwhile, speaking to NDTV, Barry Gardiner, another Labour MP who has been spearheading the anti-Dow protests, said "it is time for Indian politicians to take a stand on the issue."

"Investigations need to be made into the Dow tender. But pressure needs to come from India. This is not just a UK campaign, and quite frankly, I want to see Indian politicians now getting involved," he added.

Dow is a major sponsor of both the London Games and the International Olympic Committee, and has stepped in to fund a high-tech "wrap" around the stadium. The London Olympics organisers, LOCOG, said in December that Dow's name would not be on the wrap during the Games or on five 'test' panels either.

India is strongly opposed to the company's involvement with the Games. Dow is the parent company of Union Carbide, whose pesticide plant leaked gas into Bhopal in 1984, killing thousands of people in the world's worst industrial accident. The company has said all liabilities for the disaster were resolved after Union Carbide settled with the Indian government in 1989 by paying $470 million to the victims. (With Inputs from AFP)

Qualcomm's sounding off about powerline networking for 2012

Qualcomm's taking to the stage at CES to unveil a new chip designed to make power-line communications less of a last-resort for people in lead-lined houses. The Qualcomm Atheros QCA6410 is a single chip designed to make powerline gear much smaller and cheaper than current models. It's also taking the moment to throw weight behind the IEEE 1905.1 hybrid networking standard, which'll be supported in the Hy-Fi portfolio of networking CPUs that coordinates WiFi, Powerline, Ethernet and Multimedia over Coax connections to make sure you can tweet about your new t-shirt in every square inch of your home. PR's after the break, folks.

Texas Keeps Close Eye on Mexico's Presidential Race

Texas economists are confident that the financial upheavals long associated with Mexican elections are a thing of the past. Still, they are closely watching what this summer's presidential contest means for the peso and, in turn, Texas' symbiotic business ties to Mexico.

Texas politicians are paying close attention, too ? to whether the trade, security and energy policies of President Felipe Calder?n?s successor will affect illegal immigration or the state?s robust trade relationship with Mexico.

Three Texas customs districts, Laredo,El Paso and Houston, rank among Mexico?s top four trading partners. Collectively, they accounted for roughly $235 billion in trade between Texas and Mexico from January to September 2011, according to United States Census data analyzed by WorldCity, which tracks global trade patterns. The figures show an increase over 2010 despite the American recession and unprecedented violence in Mexico because of warring drug cartels.

Gerardo Schwebel, the executive vice president of International Bank of Commerce?s international division in Laredo, said the future of this booming trade relationship partly depends on what investors anticipate for the peso. Though Schwebel and other analysts speculate that Mexico will not see a major devaluation similar to what it experienced three presidential elections ago ??when political, social and economic factors plunged the country into a financial crisis ??he warned that its currency is still volatile.

?The reason behind that is, the uncertainty of Europe and the U.S. economy have added pressures to the Mexican peso,? Schwebel said. He added that the Mexican customer must constantly measure whether he can make payments in dollars, or whether he decides to wait and see if the peso gets weaker or stronger, depending on what he?s doing, importing or exporting.

Major reforms carried out in Mexico since 1994, the last year the Institutional Revolutionary Party, or PRI, won the presidency, have prevented the peso from plummeting as it did that year.

?Today it?s a completely different scenario in the sense that Mexico?s central bank has very deep national reserves,? said Roberto Coronado, an economist at the El Paso branch of the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas. Coronado said that as of December, Mexico had $140 billion in foreign exchange reserves, plus a line of credit with the International Monetary Fund worth $72 billion.

?You?re talking about access to more than $200 billion under their disposal in case they have to react to something,? Coronado said.

That something could be the ongoing European debt crisis, a deepening recession in the United States ??or even a shift in which a new political party takes the helm.

The PRI?s Enrique Pe?a Nieto, the former governor of the state of Mexico, is the presumed front-runner. The leftist Party of the Democratic Revolution, or PRD, will field Andr?s Manuel L?pez Obrador of Tabasco, who in 2006 lost the presidential election to Calder?n. Calderon?s own National Action Party, or PAN, is choosing between Santiago Creel, a Mexican senator and former minister of the interior; Josefina V?zquez Mota, a former member of Mexico?s Chamber of Deputies; and Ernesto Cordero, the country?s former finance minister. V?zquez Mota, a former campaign manager for Calder?n who is vying to be the country?s first female president, will most likely be named the party?s nominee in February.

Schwebel said it is important to Texas businesses that the winner maintain Calder?n?s economic policies and a consistent plan to combat organized crime, which has contributed to more than 50,000 homicides in Mexico in under six years.

?The North American economy is 25 percent of the global economy, and we want that to grow,? he said. ?The PRI and the PAN and even the PRD do not want to disrupt that as they try to set up their strategy in combating the wave of violence.?

Eric Olson, a senior associate at the Mexico Institute of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington, D.C., said that all of the candidates have vowed, in varying ways, to rein in the military?s role in the drug war and to instead rely on civilian police forces.

But it is unclear how quickly that can happen, Olson said. The relatively small ranks of the federal police force and the inherent weaknesses of the local and state police forces ? and the government's limited ability to bolster them with honest officers ? could delay the shift.

?I think there?s just bound to be a transition period, and the question is how soon that takes place,? Olson said. ?My hunch is that it will be a slow process.?

Immigration rates, both legal and illegal, will depend on more than just violence in Mexico, experts said.

Demetrios Papademetriou, the president and co-founder of the Migration Policy Institute, based in Washington, D.C., said that if the economic policy of a new administration dramatically improved the quality of life for Mexicans ??by taking on tough monopolies, for example, or providing energy incentives ??more Mexicans might be inspired to stay.

?That will make the middle class in Mexico perhaps a bit better off; therefore, they spend less money on basic services,? he said. ?Then, presumably, over four or five or seven years, the pressure for immigration from Mexico will subside further.?

He said that this is especially likely if Mexico?s economy continues to grow at a faster rate than the United States?, which he said is only ?sputtering forward.?

Papademetriou does not think changes in American immigration policy will hinge significantly on who becomes the next Mexican president. He said the party that wins would most likely pursue the existing strategy of trying to protect the economic ties between the United States and Mexico from immigration trends.

?They will want to protect the interest of the Mexicans living in the United States,? he said. ?Just like the PAN or any other party in Mexico, the PRI will be trying to make sure that they inoculate the broader economic relationship from being impacted too much by the migration situation.?

While Texas business and policy experts keep their eyes on Mexico?s presidential contest, some Mexico City election officials are looking back at Texas, working overtime to try to increase turnout among Mexican expatriates living in the United States.

This presidential election is only the second in Mexican history in which expatriates can cast a ballot from abroad. The Instituto Federal Electoral, or IFE, estimates that the population of native-born Mexicans living in the United States reached 11.4 million in 2010. Those who are at least 18 are eligible to vote in the country?s elections.

In 2006, the first year Mexico collected ballots from abroad, IFE received about 53,000 applications for placement on the foreign voters list and accepted about 41,000; 33,111 cast ballots.

Source: Fisher "95 percent certain" to coach Rams

By Mike Freeman, CBS Sports

Jeff Fisher continues to contemplate coaching the Rams or the Dolphins though it is increasingly looking like Fisher has all but made a decision.

A source close to Fisher says the former Titans coach is "95 percent certain" he's going to accept offer from Rams. An official decision could come as early as Monday, the source said. (Though my guess is the Rams would announce it on Tuesday so as not to interfere with news from national championship game.)

Now, there's a caveat here, and it's a big one. It's the wallet of Miami owner Stephen Ross. It's very possible Ross makes a huge, final offer that could sway Fisher. So far, a source says, that hasn't happened.

But that doesn't mean it won't and that's the only reason, I'm told, it's not a totally done deal. Fisher is waiting for the final word from Ross.

A source also confirmed Fisher has a fear the Rams might move to Los Angeles though that isn't said to be a deal-breaker.

But everything continues to point to Fisher coaching the Rams with the Ross wallet being the only possible hangup.

Ecuador Court Upholds $18 Billion Judgment Against Chevron for Oil Pollution (ContributorNetwork)

According to the Miami Herald, an appeals court in Ecuador has upheld an $18 billion judgment against Chevron Corp. for the dumping of millions of gallons of contaminated wastewater into streams and creeks in the country. The environmental contamination was caused by Chevron's predecessor Texaco over several decades up until the 1990s, followed by the two companies merging in 2001.

Chevron has refused to accept the ruling in the case that has extended for over 18 years and says it will continue to fight the decision. Here are some facts about the oil contamination in Ecuador:

* PBS reported that Texaco discovered oil in the South American country in 1967, which helped contribute to the nation's first oil boom and economic growth during the 1970s.

* Today, Ecuador is in about $14 million worth of debt and money from oil proceeds makes up approximately 40 percent of its export earnings and roughly 33 percent of the government's total revenue.

* The country had initially invited Texaco to explore and produce oil through a partnership with the Ecuadorian government in which the oil company designed the wells and built the transportation pipeline, according to the University of Michigan.

* Texaco disposed of highly toxic oil byproducts, also called production water, by dumping it into pits next to each well and then allowing it to flow into nearby waterways after the pits reached capacity.

* The wastewater was high in cancer-causing chemicals like benzene and hydrocarbons and contaminated the pristine land and water of numerous indigenous tribes in Ecuador.

* NPR noted that in 1993 the original lawsuit was filed against Texaco in a New York court, but Chevron later argued that the case should be moved to Ecuador instead.

* The lawsuit includes 145,000 pages of evidence of oil contamination through the 30 years that Texaco extracted 1.5 billion barrels of crude oil in the country.

* An article from the Examiner added that the court case represents around 30,000 indigenous people and farmers who are looking for the cleanup of contaminated areas in addition to health care.

* Currently the $18 billion in damages is approximately close to one-third of Ecuador's gross domestic product and it's the most expensive environmental lawsuit in history.

* Ecuadorian government officials have decided to close off the Yasuni National Park in the Amazon, a large undeveloped oil field with an estimated 1 billion barrels, to oil companies through at least 2013 as a way to protect the area, according to UPI.

* Government-owned oil company Petroecuador said that it is spending millions to clean up numerous sites contaminated by Texaco.

Ball, Konz should be NFL-bound after Rose Bowl

Los Angeles - This time last year, Bret Bielema cried at the podium before his final Rose Bowl interview session.

OK, I admit it. I was the troublemaker who asked the J.J. Watt question that made the big ol' Wisconsin coach turn all gooey.

Hey, I'd cry, too, if I were about to lose my best defensive player to the NFL.?Like Bielema, you've probably noticed the havoc Watt is creating for a playoff team in Houston.

Imagine what he might have done this season for a UW defense that could've used a stop or two against the States, Michigan and Ohio. Imagine what he might do Monday if turned loose like a half-crazy retriever on a pond full of Ducks.

"I wish J.J. were here," Bielema said Saturday with nary a trace of nostalgia in his voice. "I'd feel a lot better."

But, of course, Watt did absolutely the right thing.

For the record, Bielema did not go into Tammy Faye Bakker mode this time when I asked about two current underclassmen with career decisions to make after the Rose Bowl. He was positively analytical, at least as analytical as Bielema gets, on the possibility of losing Heisman Trophy finalist Montee Ball and center Peter Konz to the draft.

"I had a great NFL career," Bielema said. "Six days. It was awesome. I think these guys' (careers) should be a little bit longer than that."

There is a very good chance Ball will break Barry Sanders' NCAA single-season record of 39 touchdowns. That would be a monumental way to go out.

There is a 100% chance Konz will play in the Rose Bowl despite the ankle injury that cost him the last eight-plus quarters of the regular season. "You're darned right I am," he said. "I mean, who can say they can play twice?"

Konz shouldn't concern himself about going for the Rose Bowl trifecta. He is as talented as all the great UW offensive linemen who were high-round draft picks. Go now, young Peter, at least before you get hurt again.

Ball says he'll likely leave if he's expecting to be drafted in the first or second round, but that's hard to see judging by the way the NFL operates. If I'm Ball, I'd turn pro immediately from the lower rounds because he's just not going to receive the Konz treatment during this draft or the next.

For proof, look at how your defending Super Bowl champions do business.

The Packers value big men who can move and will pay dearly for them. How many times has Ted Thompson said something to the effect that God only made a few of those people? He said it after he made B.J. Raji a first-round millionaire. And I know for a fact the Packers love Konz as the Texans loved Watt, and he was No. 11 overall.

Offensive linemen like Konz are generally a good investment as a high-round pick. They typically have long careers.

Running backs, not so much. Three or four seasons, if they're lucky. The NFL, and especially the Packers, treat them as disposable goods and interchangeable parts. Why spend high-round dollars if they're not going to last?

Ryan Grant was a non-drafted free agent and a Giants castoff. James Starks was a sixth-rounder. Brandon Saine was not drafted. How is that working out for a team that has won 20 of its last 21 games?

When the Bears did not have Matt Forte or Marion Barber last week, they plugged in two non-drafted free agents who rushed for a combined 199 yards. Where is the incentive to change that sound business practice?

Unlike P.J. Hill, Michael Bennett, John Clay and assorted other UW tailbacks who were beating on the Camp Randall door to leave early, Ball doesn't seem to be in a rush to get out of Wisconsin. That's good. He's a terrific person with a supportive family who moved to Madison. I'd love to see him run for one more season with the Badgers.

However, Ball likely will have 300 carries this season after the Rose Bowl. If he comes back, the new offensive coordinator is going to give him 300 more in his senior season. That's a lot of body wear and tear in starting a pro career when NFL personnel evaluators are predisposed to be wary of any back used that much in college. It's like buying a car with 100,000 miles.

What's good for UW sometimes runs counter to what's good for the individual. In these cases, I'm all for the individuals. For Konz, it's a no-brainer. For Ball, it comes down to being paid for his innate skills before he takes too much of a beating in college.

Have a great Rose Bowl, guys. Then have a great life.?

PFT: Jones says Garrett's job is safe

Dallas Cowboys v Washington RedskinsGetty Images

With Aaron Rodgers moving toward the league MVP award and Drew Brees penciled in for offensive player of the year, things get a little more dicey when trying to discern the defensive player of the year.

The outcome of the 50-person Associated Press vote typically hinges on a vague blend of statistical performance, team performance, name recognition, and reputation.? This year, 16 weeks of football have produced no clear-cut favorite.? And so the outcome will hinge on the performance of the top contenders in Week 17.

With no big-name players near the top of the league-leading interception list (seven is the high-water mark), the sackmasters will get primary consideration.? Currently, Vikings defensive end Jared Allen has 18.5, Eagles defensive end Jason Babin and Cowboys linebacker DeMarcus Ware have 18, Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul has 15.5, and 49ers rookie linebacker Aldon Smith has 14.

If Allen or Babin can match or beat Michael Strahan?s all-time record of 22.5*, that guy (not to be confused with Jon Gruden?s ?this guy?) will be the most likely winner of the award.? But if they fall short of the record, the recognition could fall to Ware or Pierre-Paul, based on whether the Cowboys or Giants win on Sunday night and secure the NFC East crown.

With Babin and Allen playing for non-playoff teams, a berth in the postseason could provide the final nudge for Ware or Pierre-Paul ? especially since they?ll be playing in the highest-profile nationally-televised game on the eve of the casting of the ballots by the AP voters.

Pierre-Paul, drafted in 2010 as a project for a team that didn?t technically need another defensive end, has exploded down the stretch, winning the NFC defensive player of the week award twice in the last three weeks and making it to the Pro Bowl without being on the ballot.

With two sacks, Ware would become the first player with 20 or more sacks in two separate seasons.

Other candidates could come from the Ravens? defense, which has gotten 13 sacks and a great Thanksgiving night performance from linebacker Terrell Suggs.? His votes could be diluted by nose tackle Haloti Ngata.

49ers defensive lineman Justin Smith could get serious consideration, despite not having high-end stats, given his key role in the dominance of the San Francisco defense.

Broncos linebacker Von Miller also could get votes, even though he?s more likely to contend for the defensive rookie of the year award, if Aldon Smith (14 sacks) doesn?t break Jevon Kearse?s rookie record of 15.

Regardless, this award is coming down to the final week ? and possibly the final game ? of regular-season action.
