People seek high-calorie foods in tough times

Jan. 22, 2013 ? Bad news about the economy could cause you to pack on the pounds, according to a new study published in Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science.

The study shows that when there is a perception of tough times, people tend to seek higher-calorie foods that will keep them satisfied longer. When subconsciously primed with such messages, a "live for today" impulse is triggered causing people to consume nearly 40 percent more food than when compared to a control group primed with neutral words.

"The findings of this study come at a time when our country is slowly recovering from the onslaught of negative presidential campaign ads chalked with topics such as the weak economy, gun violence, war, deep political divides, just to name a few problem areas," said Juliano Laran, an assistant professor of marketing at the University of Miami School of Business Administration, who conducted the research with doctoral student Anthony Salerno. "Now that we know this sort of messaging causes people to seek out more calories out of a survival instinct, it would be wise for those looking to kick off a healthier new year to tune out news for a while."

Further, when the same group primed with "tough times" messages was then told the food they were sampling was low-calorie, they consumed roughly 25 percent less of the food. According to the researchers this is because if people perceive that food resources are scarce, they place a higher value on food with more calories.

Several studies were conducted as part of the research. In the first one, the researchers invited study subjects to join in a taste test for a new kind of M&M. Half the participants were given a bowl of the new candy and were told that the secret ingredient was a new, high-calorie chocolate. The other half of the participants also received a bowl of M&Ms but were told the new chocolate was low-calorie. All of the participants were told that they could sample the product in order to complete a taste test evaluation form.

In reality, there was no difference in the M&Ms that the two groups were given to taste. The researchers were actually measuring how much participants consumed after they were exposed to posters containing either neutral sentences or sentences related to struggle and adversity. Those who were subconsciously primed to think about struggle and adversity ate closer to 70 percent more of the "higher-calorie" candy vs. the "lower-calorie" option, while those primed with neutral words did not significantly differ in the amount of M&M's consumed.

"It is clear from the studies that taste was not what caused the reactions, it was a longing for calories," continued Laran. "These findings could have positive implications for individuals in the health care field, government campaigns on nutrition, and companies promoting wellness. And, certainly beware of savvy food marketers bearing bad news."

Protecting Your Business from Negative Reviews Online | Small Biz ...

Online Reputation Management for Your Small Business

By Rieva Lesonsky

Do you ever Google your business?s name just to see what pops up? You should, because what you find on the Internet and social media might surprise you. Negative reviews, claims that your business cheats customers or accusations against you personally could the first search result you find?and that means that?s the first thing prospective customers see, as well. If you don?t practice online reputation management, your business could suffer.

Last year I interviewed an entrepreneur who lived through a nightmare situation when a scathing review of his business on social media led to a 50 percent drop in sales. The business owner had to lay off staff and, a year and many online reputation management efforts later, his business was just beginning to recover.

A situation like this is every small business owner?s worst fear. In fact, fear of negative reviews on social media is one factor that keeps some small business owners off of social media altogether. But taking this attitude is putting your head in the sand. The reality is, customers are saying things about you online, both good and bad, whether you know it or not. If you don?t know what they?re saying about you, how can you take steps toward smart?online reputation management?

Here are some steps you can take for savvy online reputation management:

  • Set up a Google Alert on your business name, your name, and even your key products? names so that when someone says something about you online or on social media, you?ll be alerted. Once a month or so, type your business name into search engines and see what comes up. You might be surprised.
  • Claim your business listing on local search directories such as Local.com, Citysearch.com and Google. Again, you may be surprised to see that your business information is listed; many directories put the names of local businesses into their systems, and that information may or may not be correct. You want to make sure the proper information is listed. This is also a time to check out any reviews that pop up.
  • Know what review and social media sites matter to your business. If you own a restaurant, you?ll want to check out Yelp. If you run a bed and breakfast, you need to look at TripAdvisor. Like it or not, your business is getting mentioned on these sites and you need to practice online reputation management there.
  • What if you find out someone is badmouthing your business online? Take steps to contact the person and find out what the issue is. While you will want to make your first contact in the public forum of the website, it?s best to take further communications offline. If you can remedy the situation, do so. Once the situation is resolved, share that information online.

More and more today, customers value small businesses that are honest, so trying to hide a negative review or comment will do you more harm than good. Instead, focus on turning the negative into a positive. Handling a tough situation in a professional manner can win new customers to your side.

How Article Marketing Can Generate Leads For Your Business ...

Article Marketing To Generate Leads For Your BusinessThere is no questions that one of the most daunting challenges for network marketing online is getting leads for your network marketing or mlm business.

Any business cannot move forward or grow without customers and this is an even greater obstacle for the online network marketer.

There are many different online methods to generate leads for your network marketing or mlm business.?? This post is to expound on the method of content or ?article marketing.? Many online marketers use this one method because of its low cost.? Typically the only cost is the time the online marketer spends generating the article and publishing it to the world wide web audience.

The marketer writes articles relevant to his/her network marketing, mlm or affiliate business.? The article should be informative and of interest to your prospective reader.? The article is then presented to online article sites, ezines and other sites such as forums that have followers looking for information about the article subject.

The prospects follow a link you have inserted in your article to your sales page, your blog or landing page.? The result you are looking for is a product sale, email capture or enrollment in your primary business.

With this scenario you can inexpensively generate leads for your network marketing, mlm or affiliate products.

However the time to write the article and submit to the possibly 1,000 + article site, blogs, forums, ezines, etc., can kill your business before it starts.? But do not fear,? there are several alternatives.

Purchase a software package that will submit your articles automatically.? There is some cost to this method.? The software takes your article, called a ?seed? article, spins (or rewrites) the article and submits this article to possibly thousands of article sites.? The spinning process generates many unique versions of your ?seed? article.? This process is done by the software and is sometimes easily detected (by Google) and robotic submission.

Another option to get your articles published on numerous sites is an article submission service.? You enter your article into the submission service, spin it yourself (or purchase the spinner offered by the submission service), and once approved the submission service sends it to thousands of article sites, blogs, forums, etc.? The articles are sent over a specified time sequence so as not to appear robotic and inhuman.? Your articles?will have a higher acceptance rate when you use a submission service.?? There is a fee for this service, but when?you weigh the cost of your time, it is well worth the small amount you spend.

The choice is yours.? The submission service we recommend is Submit Your Article.? This is one of our affiliate products that we highly recommend to enhance your network marketing or mlm business.? We find the software is friendly to the ?newbie? and the ROI from your article submission?income?will more than pay for the cost.

For those who find it difficult to write articles or don?t want to take the time required for this type of marketing, you can also purchase PLR articles.? There are services where you can purchase articles already written and simply spin them to?create unique material.? Sometimes these services are expensive but definitely worth it if your budget will allow.? Done For You Article Marketing Service is another affiliate program we use and highly recommend if in the beginning you find creating your own articles a daunting task.

These articles are professionally?produced with the content written to get the?customer action that you desire, whether it?be purchasing an affiliate? product or signing up with?your network?marketing or mlm business.

While not always inexpensive, the quality of content and consistency of submission by you can make the ROI on such a service very desirable.

Being consistent with the submission of good quality articles?can result in a higher ROI? as your articles are being spread across the internet to a world wide prospective customer base.? The more you write the easier it will become.

You should give it a try.

To your success.

Liat Kornowski: 'New Girl' Recap: Morning Wood, Koala Claws And Serial Killers

Note: Do not read on if you have not yet seen Season 2, Episode 14 of FOX "New Girl," titled "Pepperwood."

What do you get when you mix up Jess' quirks, Nick's ample free time, and a short story about a stabbed deer? Comedy, with a touch of macabre.

In this week's "New Girl," Jess is super proud of herself for getting through to a student (brilliant
zinger no. 1: the annoyance bowl). She gives her adult students a descriptive imagery assignment and one of them, Edgar, writes such a spectacular story, she insists Nick reads it.

Winston, whose hours are reversed since he works nights, wakes up to find everyone in the kitchen -- including Cece in a beautiful kimono style robe. Turns out, Winston has healthy circulation in the morning, which Cece soon feels when she bumps into him, private area to private area.

Behold: the pogo.

Despite initial protest, Nick reads Edgar's piece and finds it "psychotic." Umm ... I would too. The man describes dressing up as a gimp and hiding in the bushes until the big-eyed deer passes by, after which he stabs it to death and splashes in his blood. Since Jess won't heed his warnings, Nick decides to investigate. Might as well. What else does he have going on?

Winston, who feels terribly awkward about the incident with Cece, consults with Schmidt, who accidentally spills about "the pogo," i.e. what your friends talk about when you leave the room. In this case, it's Winston poking everyone with his very own pogo stick. It happened with Schmidt once, with Jess twice. Even Nick's pizza got poked. This opens up a Pandora's box.

Back in class, Jess (in her ever appropriate nesting dolls dress) praises her class for their liberal use of adjectives when Nick comes in. Or rather, Julius Pepperwood comes in. Masquerading as an ex-cop ex-marine, Nick Pepperwood is there to protect Jess and look into the weirdo with the cuckoo deer stabbing story. This involves stealing Edgar's notebook and compiling a sketch board, "Homeland" style.

In the apartment, Schmidt tries to find out what his "pogo" is. It isn't that he dances like a water snake; it isn't that he barges into people's showers; it isn't his caterpillar eyebrows -- zinger no. 2 and the best thing ever is Schmidt's half-shaved eyebrows. I die. It's not even his face mole. Apparently, our ladies' man has a case of barnacle toenails.

Nick is determined to drive over to Edgar's house and prove his theory right. Jess, hoping to dissuade him and/or be there to bail him out of jail for trespassing, joins in. This provides for a much needed Nick-Jess alone time. Quite possibly, the best platonic-with-potential relationship since Chandler and Monica ... just with sex appeal.

They find out Edgar lives with his mother and upon spying on him drag a duffle bag out of his "Painless Plumbing" van, decide unanimously he's a killer. Safe word: apricot.

When Jess and Nick get home -- now that the cat is out of the bag (not the duffle bag) -- they want to know their respective pogos. Jess' is -- you'll be amazed -- that she's a know-it-all. Nick's is actually sweet. His roommates are worried that he doesn't take care of himself so Schmidt crushes pills into his food and they take turns stuffing bills into his pants pockets before putting them in the dryer (zinger no. 3 - Cece's baby voice. Where has this silly side been?).

At Edgar's house, Nick attempts to make his way into the shed and find out what's in the duffle bag. Standing on a ladder and peeking through a window, he sees oh-so creepy drawings of Jess look-alikes with googly eyes and plenty of weaponry. At that exact moment, Edgar walks into Jess' office hours to find her yelling "apricots!" into her iPhone. He tells her, quite eerily (I swear, I got spooked), that he decided on an ending for his main character and she shall die. Jess tries a rebuttal, but her ringtone scares him off when he realizes he had heard it the day before, outside his house. Nick, finally inside the shed, is hit upside the head by Edgar's mom. Jess comes to his rescue just as Edgar starts pulling him out, and Edgar's mom -- OK, fine, she's not his mom! - sprays her with pepper spray.

Well, what do you know -- Edgar is not a murderer. He's just very creative and not good at drawing eyes (hence the googly ones). Oh, and yeah. That old lady is his girlfriend.

Post their near-death experience, Nick decided to take care of himself. That, of course, means bacon for breakfast, extra butter and salt on top. Jess finds that he started writing again, "Julius Pepperwood: Zombie Detective." All of his murder victims are already dead. Genius.

Best Quotes:

Nick: "Look at that font! What is this, amateur hour? At least use Palatino."

Jess: "There's no such thing as a gimp costume."
Schmidt: "You've seen me in one before"

Nick: "I'm from Chicago. Thin crust pizza? No thank you, I'm from Chicago."

Jess: "What's my one rule?"
Nick: "To not steal your yarn."

Jess: "A lot of people live with their mothers. Like my Uncle Randy."
Nick: "He can't go near parks."
Jess: "He was cleared."

Schmidt: "They make shoes for your penis. They're called pants!"

Jess: "What if my character lives and the book just goes on. Imagine, coming to the end of the book and then finding a lot more book. Surprise!"

Jess (reading Nick's story): "Pepperwood had two friends. One, if you count his hat."

"New Girl" airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. EST on Fox.

Life Fitness Showcases Two New Apps Based on its LFopen APIs

Life FitnessLife Fitness stands as the first fitness equipment manufacturer to open its products to the developer community via APIs. Life Fitness created LFopen to encourage app development around Life Fitness equipment. Currently, APIs exist to enable web based applications or mobile applications that pull data from machines. Chris Clawson, Life Fitness President, commented on the need and benefit of opening up equipment to the developer community:

?Our users want the ability to customize their workouts and create unique experiences that engage and motivate them. With our new open platform products, we are giving consumers the tools they need to enhance their fitness routines by integrating personal technology.?

Life Fitness unveiled two apps that utilize LFopen at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) this week. Runtastic and Wahoo Fitness pull data from the Life Fitness treadmill (Elevation Series Discover SE treadmill) and allow users to track and analyze workouts as well as share progress with friends.??Life Fitness hopes that integration with such apps will lead to a new era in fitness and bring Life Fitness equipment to its full potential.

With LFopen, developers can call workout data, workout presets (e.g. age, weight, settings, etc.), and realtime data. The APIs are currently compatible with three types of fitness equipment (i.e. Elevation Series Discover SE, Discover SI and Engage Consoles, and Consumer Track Console). Those interested can visit the LFopen site and email the developer team for access.

Tracking health and fitness progress can be a painfully manual task, and the cumbersome process often leads to workout routine abandonment. API integration with fitness equipment takes the manual entry out of the picture and allows apps and websites to automatically track progress. Life Fitness has prompted a new look at the developer/fitness world relationship and could lead to life changing apps.

Virginia Tech loses to Boston College, 86-75, snapping Eagles' road losing streak in ACC

BLACKSBURG ??

Ryan Anderson scored 26 points as Boston College snapped an eight-game ACC road losing streak, beating short-handed Virginia Tech 86-75 Wednesday night at Cassell Coliseum.

Boston College's victory was its second true road win this year. The Eagles beat Penn State in State College in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge in November.

Virginia Tech played without starting guard Robert Brown, who had a high temperature at the shootaround and was sent home. The loss of Brown left the Hokies with six scholarship players. Forward Marshall Wood missed his fifth consecutive game because of a broken bone in his left foot.

Erick Green finished with 24 points and nine assists to lead the Hokies (9-6, 0-2 ACC), who lost their fourth straight game. Jarell Eddie added 21 points for Tech.

Boston College (9-6, 1-1) led by 12 early in the second half but had to fight off a Virginia Tech rally.

Poor BC shot selection allowed the Hokies to hang around, and Virginia Tech pulled within 61-58 with 7:02 left when Green found a wide-open C.J. Barksdale for a dunk.

Virginia Tech got a stop, and Green tried to run an isolation play on the Hokies' next possession. But he lost the ball, and Anderson scored on the other end on a transition outlet pass to push the lead back to five. The Eagles kept Virginia Tech at arm's length the rest of the way.

Boston College scored 29 points off of 17 Tech turnovers. Lonnie Jackson scored 22 points and Olivier Hanlan added 17 for the Eagles.

The Eagles shook off a slow start and used a 15-3 spurt ? including a 10-0 half-ending run ? to take a 32-26 lead at the break.

Green's high-arcing jumper with 5:33 left in the half put the Hokies up 23-17. But Tech went cold the rest of the half, with the only basket coming at the 3:56 mark when walk-on Will Johnston hit a 3-pointer to put the Hokies up 26-22.

The Eagles subsequently took command. Boston College took the lead on a Hanlan free throw and pushed it to 32-26 at the break on a Dennis Clifford dunk with 3 seconds left in the half.

Notes: Boston College's last ACC road win was at Virginia Tech in the 2010-11 season. ? Entering Wednesday's game, 93 percent of BC's minutes came from freshmen and sophomores. All five starters Wednesday were underclassmen. ? Barksdale, who was benched in the Hokies' last game at Maryland due to poor effort in practice and games, was back in the starting lineup Wednesday.
